WD-40 was born on 23 September 1953 in San Diego, California, when Norman B. Larsen, Gordon Dawson and John B. Gregory founded the Rocket Chemical Company with the goal of developing a water-displacement product to protect space rockets from corrosion. The name WD-40 comes directly from the research process: "Water Displacement", fortieth formulation. In 1958 the product appeared on store shelves, and in 1969 the company was renamed after its sole product. Over the following decades, WD-40 expanded into more than 176 countries, with a range that today includes the Multi-Use product, the WD-40 Specialist® line for professional use, and dedicated lines for motorcycles and bicycles. With over 70 years of history and more than 2,000 documented uses, WD-40 is today the most iconic and recognised multi-use lubricant in the world.
